Gosau am Dachstein – Unesco world natural heritage
The municipality of Gosau with its approximately 1,800 inhabitants is located at 767m of altitude in Gosautal Valley and surrounded by mountains.

The view from Gosausee Lake to King Dachstein (2,996m) is world-famous. The popular photo motif has always attracted painters and nature lovers. Already the world traveller and natural scientist Alexander Freiherr von Humboldt referred to Gosausee Lake as the “Eye of God”.
Ice Age has not only left the glacier but also the natural gem of Löckernmoos, a unique high moor with a small moor lake – Löchernsee Lake. This scenic place can be visited during the summer months.
A well-marked hiking trail – at times it follows the forestry trail – leads from Hintertal Valley to the historic “Schleifsteinbrüchen” quarries. Still today top quality sandstone is extracted in the quarries. “Badstubn Franz”, one of the quarrymen, has opened his hut and together with his wife he lovingly looks after hikers on a break-stop. If you prefer to conquer this route in a more relaxed way, you can take a slow train to get there.
From the “Schleifsteinbrüche” quarries a beautiful loop trail that can be covered in an hour leads past Löckernmoos/Löckernsee Lake, past the Wildfrauenloch Place of Happiness and back to the starting point.
The Zwieselalm Hiking Area too offers plenty of hiking tours for the whole family. You can get their easily by taking Gosaukammbahn lift (May to October). Many huts invite to enjoy culinary delights on your hike. Loop trails that can be covered in one to three hours, some of which can even be accessed with prams, make a unique fauna and flora accessible and lead to the most beautiful vantage points. During the winter months the mountains around Gosautal Valley turn into the popular Dachstein West Ski Area. Enjoy long downhills and varied slopes that are especially suitable for beginners.
140km of slopes are to the skiers’ delight. After skiing numerous huts invite to enjoying regional culinary delights.
Not only friends of alpine winter sports get their money’s worth. The that lead through Gosautal Valley and the floodlit toboggan run offer a welcome change.Gosau is also a good destination for ski mountaineers and snowshoe hikers.
Horse-drawn carriage rides through the romantic winter forest are another popular pastime. A relaxed break stop is also a must. The all-round programme provides for an unforgettable experience.
