Bad Ischl – Hallstatt (21 km)

From Bad Ischl travel on the Salzkammergut Federal Road (B 145) past the former salt mine of Bad Ischl to Lauffen and Bad Goisern. There, you are strongly recommended to take a break and visit the charming Predigstuhl On-Mountain Inn from where there are uninterrupted panoramic views of the awesome World Cultural Heritage Region. The inn is easily accessible by a toll free panoramic road. Back down in the valley, leave Bad Goisern on B 145 Road and continue driving along B 166 Road to Steeg, Gosaumühle and along the right shores of unfathomably deep Hallstättersee Lake to the World Cultural Heritage Resort of Hallstatt where you can park your car.
Hallstatt occupies a dramatic position on the western shores of Hallstättersee Lake, jutting out into the lake at the base of a precipitous cliff and towered by the ragged stone wall of the Dachstein Mountain.
Among its most impressive cultural attractions are the Hallstatt Museum, the Parish Church with its mountain cemetery, the Hallstatt Bone House, the historic market square and the archeological excavations at Janu sports store. The Hallstatt World Cultural Heritage Museum covers 7,000 years of the history of the area and provides visitors with interesting insights into the culture of this fascinating World Cultural Heritage Resort.
A special delight is taking a cruise of the lake and admiring the breathtaking scenery and the town’s outstanding setting and architecture.
What’s more, you can follow the tracks of the Celts and explore the bizarre underground worlds of salt at the outstanding Hallstatt Salt Worlds, noted for being the oldest salt mine in the world.
