St. Florian

St. Florian, the oldest Monastery of the Augustinian Canons Regular in Austria, is an outstanding Baroque jewel and landmark for the entire region. The Monastery was constructed over the grave of Christian martyr Saint Florian. It possesses two organs, the larger one of which is known as the Bruckner Organ. It was played by Austrian composer and organist Anton Bruckner, who is buried beneath the organ inside the church. Lying halfway between Salzburg and Vienna, St. Florian satisfies the visitors who come to rejoice in this pleasant small town so rich in beautiful things and one that delights in welcoming those who come to share them.

Arts and Music

The Augustinian Monastery provided a wealthy and culturally sophisticated milieu for the creation of paintings, compositions, and scientific research. The greatest composer of church music in 19th-century Austria, Anton Bruckner became the organist at St. Florian as a young man. St. Florian is also known for its boys' choir that has been a traditional part of the monastery's worship since its existence and has contributed significantly to the identity of the town. Cultural highlights include exquisite concerts in the baroque setting of the Monastery and at Tillysburg Castle, the wonderful Picture Gallery and one of the oldest and most impressive libraries in all of Austria to the annual Bruckner Days Music Festival.

Castles and Museums

The purpose of the area’s numerous museums is not only to inform on tradition and culture, but also to trigger the visitors imagination, stir the emotion and create a real sense of atmosphere. In the beautiful Sumerauerhof Outdoor Museum visitors can relive the story of the area’s farming. Tillysburg Castle is a square structure with obliquely placed flanking turrets and embattled walls. Hohenbrunn Castle is the only castle that was built by famous Baroque architect Jakob Prandtauer. Today, the Castle houses a Hunting Museum. The Historic Fire Department Museum is located in the former Meierhof Farm of the Monastery and showcases the rich history and tradition of the fire department.
