Schallaburg Castle is some 5km from Melk. It is one of the most beautiful Renaissance castles north of the Alps.The oldest parts of the castle, like the Romanesque block and the Gothic chapel, date back to the middle ages.
In 1572 Schallaburg Castle became its characteristic look: modelled after Italian palazzo the prosperous Losensteiner dynasty created a manor, the silhouette of which can be seen from far.
The rambling, idyllic tournament court with its elaborate outdoor staircases and the unique sculptured decorations of the 2-storey terracotta arcade court, demonstrate prosperity and love or art.
The many-facetted beauty of Schallaburg Castle which is located amidst the picturesque landscape of the Mostviertel district, makes it very attractive for culture and beauty lovers.
Exhibitions
Schallaburg Castle is renowned for its annually changing cultural-historical, contemporary and archaeological exhibitions. Top class exhibitions of international quality are presented on an area of 1,000m².The museum’s pedagogical program presents the exhibitions in an interesting way and is also highly attractive for children.
The2007 Exhibition “Crusaders – Pilgrims. Warriors. Adventurers.” reports on the origins of crusaders, on confrontations, on exchange of different cultural groups and on the legacy of crusaders for the life of today. Date: March 31 – November 4, 2007
The Historic Garden
No flower is as important for cultural history as the rose. She represents femininity, love and beauty.The garden has been designed in the style of Mannerism and captivates with its historic roses, ornamental wood and herbs and with the typical apple groves of Renaissance times.
Adventure Playground
At first sight the giant, smoke spewing toy dragon in front of the castle gates seems unusual, but actually it fits perfectly for a moat.
