Schallaburg Castle some 5km from Melk, ranks amongst the most beautiful Renaissance castles North of the Alps.The castle’s oldest roots date back to the Middle Ages, examples of which are found in the Romanesque living area and the Gothic chapel.
In 1572 Schallaburg Castle got today’s look: The prospering Losensteiner dynasty created a manor in the style of the Italian palazzi, the silhouette of which can still today be seen from far.
The spacious, idyllic courtyard with its wide external staircases tells of the wealth and the love of arts, just like the unique two-storey arcade yard with terracotta sculptures.

The Exhibitions
Schallaburg Castle is known for its annually changing cultural, contemporary history and archaeological exhibitions. On an exhibition area of 1,300m² there is plenty of space for top class exhibitions of international importance.

The Golden Byzantium & The Orient

Icons, eunuchs and pious monks? The Byzantium was about a lot more: An empire with a more than thousand year old history. A state that had an important influence on the culture of its neighbours and has shaped the Europe of today. On Schallaburg Castle one can re-experience the Byzantine Empire some 550 years after its fall.
The Historic Garden
Designed in the style of Mannerism this garden captivates with historic roses, ornamental wood and herbs, as well as the two apple groves typical of Renaissance time. Not only the Renaissance garden invites to strolling and spending some time: The numerous hiking trails around the castle invite to explore the Mostviertel district with its varied landscape.
